Review Date: December 23, 2008
Reviewer: Anne P. Moore, Duluth MN USA
This is one of the best, most practical guides to self esteem building I've ever heard (how many have you heard that went in one ear and out the other?). Jack is the kind of mentor everyone should have: he offers simple and easy-to-implement self-talk suggestions, organizing techniques and tips on becoming, and living, with more awareness. They're really not secrets, just practical solutions that can help you turn the corner towards the person you know yourself to be. It's that good.
Covers a lot of terratory

Review Date: November 16, 2008
Reviewer: Martin E. Kaliski, San Francisco Bay
With interactive excercises, stories and visualizations, Jack covers a lot of terratory in this series. While much of the material is familiar to me, its all presented in a concise, easy to absorb format. There are valuable tips on how to get more organized and get more done as well as to how to feel better and more confident about yourself

Product Description

Are you as wealthy and successful as you'd like to be? Whether you realize it or not, your level of wealth and success reflects exactly what you believe you deserve.

In this lively discussion with her audience, Louise explains how we can use our mindpower to attract anything we want into our lives—more money, a rewarding career, fulfilling relationships, and more fun!

Feeling "not good enough," fearing success, and accepting our parents' negative attitudes and beliefs about money are a few of the feelings and patterns that can prevent us from having a prosperous life. Once we stop our self-criticism and learn to move beyond our limitations, we will begin attracting more "good" into our lives.

Product Description

In a career spanning more than thirty years, Patrick Swayze has made a name for himself on the stage, the screen, and television. Known for his versatility, passion and fearlessness, he's become one of our most beloved actors.

But in February 2008, Patrick announced he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Always a fighter, he refused to let the disease bring him to his knees, and his bravery has inspired both his legion of fans and cancer patients everywhere. Yet this memoir, written with wisdom and heart, recounts much more than his bout with cancer. In vivid detail, Patrick describes his Texas upbringing, his personal struggles, his rise to fame with North and South, his commercial breakthroughs in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, and the soul mate who's stood by his side through it all: his wife, writer and director Lisa Niemi.

A behind-the-scenes look at a Hollywood life and a remarkable love, this memoir is both entertainment and inspiration. Patrick and Lisa's marriage is a journey of two lives intertwined and lived as one--throughout their years in Hollywood and at home on their working ranch outside Los Angeles, and culminating in the hope and wisdom they've imparted to all who know them. This book will open the door for families, individuals, and husbands and wives to grow, bond and discover entirely new levels of love and sharing, proving that life shouldn't be lived as a series of endings, but rather as the beginning of greater strength and love.

Product Description

A few years ago, a magazine sponsored a contest for the comment most likely to end a conversation. The winning entry? "I teach English grammar." Just throw that line out at a party; everyone around you will clam up or start saying "whom."

Why does grammar make everyone so nervous? Probably because English teachers, for decades – no, for centuries – have been making a big deal out of grammar in classrooms, diagramming sentences and drilling the parts of speech, clauses, and verbals into students until they beg for mercy. Happily, you don't have to learn all those technical terms of English grammar – and you certainly don't have to diagram sentences – in order to speak and write correct English.

So rest assured – English Grammar For Dummies will probably never make your English teacher's top-ten list of must-read books, because you won't have to diagram a single sentence. What you will discover are fun and easy strategies that can help you when you're faced with such grammatical dilemmas as the choice between "I" and "me," "had gone" and "went," and "who" and "whom." With English Grammar For Dummies, you won't have to memorize a long list of meaningless rules (well, maybe a couple in the punctuation chapter!), because when you understand the reason for a particular word choice, you'll pick the correct word automatically.

English Grammar For Dummies covers many other topics as well, such as the following:

  • Verbs, adjectives, and adverbs – oh my!
  • Preposition propositions and pronoun pronouncements
  • Punctuation: The lowdown on periods, commas, colons, and all those other squiggly marks
  • Possession: It's nine-tenths of grammatical law
  • Avoiding those double negative vibes
  • How to spice up really boring sentences (like this one)
  • Top Ten lists on improving your proofreading skills and ways to learn better grammar

Just think how improving your speaking and writing skills will help you in everyday situations, such as writing a paper for school, giving a presentation to your company's big wigs, or communicating effectively with your family. You will not only gain the confidence in knowing you're speaking or writing well, but you'll also make a good impression on those around you!

Product Description

In the same tradition as such bestselling authors as Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg, Insight Meditation teacher Tara Brach has cultivated one of the largest and most active Buddhist meditation communities in the eastern United States. With Radical Self-Acceptance, this gifted guide brings her enthusiasm and depth of experience to a wide new arena of listeners for the first time. "Imagine what it would be like to be without anxiety about your imperfections," begins Brach. Employing her skills in two worlds, this clinical psychologist and meditation instructor takes on what she considers to be the most difficult – and pervasive – challenge to Westerners today: the suffering caused by our feelings of unworthiness and deficiency. Here, Brach teaches the specific practices we need to become more mindful and compassionate toward the "unforgivable" parts within ourselves – and how to free ourselves from "the prison of shame and self-aversion." Practical and supportive, Radical Self-Acceptance marks the debut of one of the most capable new voices today on the marriage between Eastern meditation and Western psychology.

Product Description

Until now, the 19th-century French sculptor Camille Claudel (1864– 1943) may have been best known for her much-romanticized relationship with sculptor Auguste Rodin, who has been erroneously portrayed as abandoning the fragile Claudel to a nervous breakdown. But this first fully researched biography of Claudel abolishes the myths attached to her life and asserts the brilliance of her art.

Drawing upon ample unpublished material, including family photographs, private letters, and medical records, Odile Ayral-Clause reveals the truth about Claudel's affair with Rodin and about her confinement and death in a mental asylum. Using Claudel's own words, she describes the crushing reproofs and prejudices the sculptor confronted — from her family, from society, from the male-dominated art world. For art historians and feminists, such issues are as relevant today as they were in fin-de-siècle Paris.

Product Description

Fifth-grader Bettina Valentino couldn’t be a bigger fan of the funky new art teacher at Bayside Prep, who walks around barefoot to soak up the energy of the earth and is full of inspiring lessons about how art can be used to challenge, shock, and surprise. But when the teacher’s unconventional methods get him into trouble with some influential parents, it’s up to Bettina and some of her art-loving friends to nip the controversy in the bud and support freedom of artistic expression.

In his first chapter book, Niki Daly gives readers a quick-paced, profusely illustrated story about a boisterous heroine – as well as tidbits about famous artists such as Picasso, Klee, and Warhol.

In this funny and insightful book, Gary Rubinstein relives his own truly disastrous first year of teaching. He begins his teaching career armed only with idealism and romantic visions of teaching - and absolutely no classroom management skills. As Rubinstein details his transformation from incompetent to successful teacher, he shows what works and what doesn't work when managing a classroom.
